Amazon Error 8542: Product ID matches multiple ASINs
Error 8542 means the UPC, EAN, JAN, ISBN, or other Product ID in your file is associated with two or more ASINs, while the title, brand, color, size, or other submitted details do not match any candidate closely enough.
The exact wording varies by template. Use the ASIN candidates and conflicting attributes printed in your own processing report; do not guess from a generic example.
What Amazon is telling you
Amazon cannot decide which catalog page your offer belongs on. The identifier has more than one catalog association, and the descriptive fields in the row do not resolve the match.
This is different from 8541: 8541 points to a conflict with a catalog match; 8542 tells you the identifier currently points to multiple possible matches.
Why this happens
- The Product ID is wrong for the product or variation.
- Brand, title, color, size, or another identity field is inconsistent with every ASIN candidate.
- The same identifier has duplicate or legacy catalog associations that require Amazon to review.
What to check first
Verify the GTIN against the physical packaging and manufacturer data.
Review each ASIN listed in the report and identify the exact product, if one exists.
Compare the attributes Amazon lists in the error report with your file.
Make sure the identifier is submitted under the correct type.
Resolve the match before changing other fields
- Check the Product ID digit by digit. If it is wrong, replace it with the identifier printed on the product and resubmit.
- If one ASIN candidate is the exact product, update your descriptive attributes to match that catalog record.
- Where the template and report instruct it, use the provided ASIN as the Product ID with ASIN as the Product ID Type.
- If none of the ASINs represents the product, open a Seller Support case and provide the Product ID, product photos, manufacturer/brand evidence, Batch ID, and the error report.
Do not solve 8542 by changing the brand
The brand field must describe the brand permanently shown on the product or packaging. Changing it only to resemble an unrelated ASIN can create a policy problem and still leaves the identifier conflict unresolved.
Before you upload again
- The Product ID matches the physical product.
- The selected ASIN is the same product and variation.
- Identity attributes match the selected catalog record.
Questions sellers ask
- Can I create a new ASIN when the Product ID already matches several ASINs?
- Not by reusing the same identifier without resolving the match. First verify whether one existing ASIN is correct. If none is correct, ask Seller Support to review the catalog association with evidence.
- Why does the report list ASINs that do not look like my product?
- The identifier may be incorrectly or historically associated with those records. Verify the physical GTIN and provide evidence to Amazon rather than editing your product to match an unrelated listing.
