Amazon Error 8572: Product ID does not match the product

Error 8572 means Amazon believes the UPC, EAN, ISBN, ASIN, or JAN in the submission does not match the product you are trying to list. Amazon checks GTIN ownership and product data against GS1 records.

What Amazon is telling you

This is an identity validation error, not a formatting warning. Amazon needs the Product ID, brand, manufacturer, and physical product to describe the same item.

A valid checksum alone is not enough. A barcode acquired from a third party may be mathematically valid but registered to another company or product in GS1 data.

Why this happens

  • The GTIN is mistyped or assigned to a different product or variation.
  • The brand or manufacturer in the listing does not align with the GS1 record.
  • The barcode was purchased from a reseller rather than licensed through GS1.
  • A non-brand owner cannot document that the manufacturer authorized the identifier for this product.

What to check first

01UPC / EAN / ISBN / JAN

Compare every digit with the barcode on the physical product or packaging.

02brand_name

Use the brand permanently affixed to the product; match spelling and punctuation.

03manufacturer

Use the company responsible for the product and keep it consistent with supporting documents.

04GS1 certificate

Confirm it is current and covers the GTIN range used by the listing.

Verify the identity trail

  1. Correct any typing or Product ID Type error and make sure each variation has the identifier assigned to that exact variation.
  2. Check the company prefix and brand information in GS1 against the listing data.
  3. If you are the brand owner, prepare the current GS1 certificate for the GTIN range and clear product/packaging photos.
  4. If you are not the brand owner, obtain written confirmation from the manufacturer or brand that the identifier is valid for the product.
  5. Contact Seller Support with the Product Name, manufacturer, brand, identifier, evidence, Batch ID, and full processing report.

Do not keep trying new barcodes

Repeatedly swapping in unrelated identifiers can make the catalog problem harder to explain. Use the identifier assigned to the product, or obtain a valid GTIN exemption when the product is genuinely eligible.

Before you upload again

  • The identifier belongs to the exact product and variation.
  • Brand and manufacturer align with GS1 and the physical product.
  • Supporting documents are current and readable.

Questions sellers ask

Can I use a barcode bought from a third-party website?
It may fail Amazon's GS1 checks because the prefix can belong to another company. Use an identifier licensed for your product or follow Amazon's GTIN exemption process when eligible.
What should a non-brand owner send to Seller Support?
Amazon's guidance asks for product, manufacturer and brand information, the identifier with evidence, and a letter or email from the manufacturer or brand confirming that the identifier is valid for the product.
